The Pentagon is building its own internet.

Posted on Nov 13, 04 11:29 AM PDT

The pentagon is building its own secure internet called Global Information Grid (GIG). The project was started 6 years ago, and the first packets of data started flowing 6 weeks ago.

"The goal is to give all American commanders and troops a moving picture of all foreign enemies and threats - "a God's-eye view" of battle." (nytimes)

I think that their two main problems are going to be bandwidth & security. And brace yourselves, this is going to cost an estimate $200B over the next couple of decades.
