China "leaps forward" with the next generation internet

China has started to use CERNET2, the next-generation internet network. It is connecting 25 universities and 20 cities.

CERNET stands for China Education and Research NETwork. The network is using IPV6, the next generation Internet Protocol (IP) addressing that should solve the current shortage of available IP addresses. The United States has 74% of all the IP addresses on the internet.

The connection speed on the network will range from 2.5 to 10 Gigabit per second, which is quite extraordinary. A peak of 40 Gigabit has been demonstrated on the CERNET2 network on December 7. A Gigabit is 1000 Megabits. For comparison, a fast broadband connection is 3Megabit/sec and the typical broadband connection is 0.5 Megabit/sec.
