Positioning System for soccer balls and players

Positioning System for football balls and playersSports might get a little bit higher tech soon. The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits has created an electronic device that can be embedded in a soccer ball and send its exact position at the rate of 2000 samples per second. Radio waves sent by the device are received by antennas around the field.

I imagine that one could even record all this data and replay it at a later time, to "reconstruct" a game in 3D for tactical analysis. I'm sure that sports channels are going to be all over it.

I don't know how practical this system is going to be for something else, depending on the range and the battery life of the positioning device.
