Will TV "on the go" be a commercial success?

Posted on Jan 13, 05 10:01 AM PDT

During the recent months, we have seen a lot of TV-capable phones. The buzz is being generated by cellphone carriers, who think that they found a new gold mine. Cellphones manufacturers are creating TV-capable cellphones hoping to get a lucrative contract with the carriers.

But despite the "buzz", I hardly find anyone around me who is excited by the prospect of subscribing to a service that lets one watch TV on a 2.5" (or smaller) screen. Do I want a TV-capable cellphone? May be I do. Would I pay a subscription for it? No!

I think that the carriers just pulled this idea from their … drawers and try to get people excited about it. I was talking to my friend Denis the other day, and we talked about how "mobile TV" is not a new concept, for years, people could have bought these cheap portable TVs. The fact that we don't carry one right now might be a sign that watching TV in a small screen and in a potentially noisy environment might not sell very well. Good luck carriers!
