AMD has promised to ship its 64-bit Athlon processor in the second half of this year as the CPU was demonstrated in the Sunnyvale headquarters today. Despite having two cores (which means that two processors are embedded on the same silicon die), the Dual-Core Athlon 64 will not be the fastest chip of the company. The Athlon 64 FX processor will stay at the top of the line, and will be the one that AMD recommends for gaming (It is funny how gaming has become the ultimate power user in recent years). Dont think that only desktops will have these CPUs, a mobile version is also in the roadmap: In 2005, AMD will introduce dual core processors to the market, starting with servers and workstations and then extending into desktops and mobile PCs (AMD). The average consumer wont initially get much benefit from the multi-processors chip. It will take time for software applications to catch up. However, one can expect better system response time because any Windows system has a bunch of programs running in parallel. I think that Ill upgrade my system in December... if the price is right. Up until now, AMD has been very competitive, so I dont worry too much about that.

Halcyonics is first to market with the Caveo, an anti-theft system designed to deter theft and ensure protection of all information on a laptop. The Caveo consists of a Type II PC Card, 110dB alarm and proprietary software that aims to protect both your laptop and its data. You can set a theft perimeter and arm the car alarm-style security and immobilsation features either in the Windows taskbar, or by using a special Motion Password (a series of physical movements). If a stolen laptop computer is recovered, a robust master code is required to regain access to the operating system and confidential information.
Fujitsu Siemens is set to launch a powerful workstation laptop. Designed primarily for professional graphics applications, such as CAD and visualization, the Celsius H230 features outstanding graphics and long-lasting batteries. The system is based on Intel's latest 915PM Express chipset, Pentium M processor and Centrino Mobile Technology. The high-resolution UXGA display (1600x1200 pixels) should be impressive too.
This power brick will provide additional power to the Sony PSP which original battery will normally last anywhere between 3h-5h when playing. It costs $19.99 at Gamestop.
Viewsonic is doing an interesting move in the Home Automation space with this 10.4" touch-screen Pad that communicates via Wifi B/G with a standard computer that can control the house (home theater, lighting, drapes...) It is quite cool. I'll just assume that anyone who can buy a house big enough to need this kind of remote control won't pay too much attention to the price. I don't have an exact number, but it can't be cheap. That's the joy of being an early adopter...
Ployer writes: "Sony, Japan has announced a free repair program for the Sony PSP. This repair is to correct a defect where controller buttons on some Playstation Portable (PSP) units may become stuck and not return to their default position. The defect occurs in part of the initial shipment of PSP units and is caused by excess plastic not being completely removed during the molding and manufacturing process of the outer cabinet. As a result, when a button is pressed, it can become caught on the excess plastic and not return fully to its default position"
Samsung, Korea has announced the addition of a 6GB version of its YH-820 Series. The YH-820 with 6GB comes in blue and pink. Features include: Color Display, FM Tuner and USB 2.0.
If you write frequently and for extended periods of time with regular pens, you may likely have developed a callous or blister on your middle finger. the innovative Ring Pen ($8.95) is an ergonomic ballpoint pen designed to fit the human hand and help to prevent writer's cramp - and ease the pain of arthritis. The fact that you actually 'wear' the pen means you no longer have to grip it with three fingers, which should reduce fatigue while writing and render your writing more rapid and even, according to the company
JVC is coming up with a refresh of their Everio line of Digital Camcorder/Camera with the JVC GZ-MC500. It brings significant improvements compared to the previous model, the JVC Everio GZMC200: 5 Megapixel still images (from 2) 3 CDD image sensor (from 1 CDD) This Uber-Camcorder records videos and still images on a removable 4GB microdrive that can store up to 1 hour of DVD-quality video. Additional microdrives cost about $180. Using microdrives is infinitely more convenient than tapes, because of the fast random access. The files are also ready to be burned on a DVD.
It took Intel many years to finally start to catch up with AMD in the 64-bit processor spacewith its new Pentium4 6xx Series. A new processor will always generate a lot of buzz in the tech world, but is this one going to make your tech life better or just more expensive? The Pentium 4 6xx Series has several highlights: It has 64-bit addressing (EMT64) The cache size has doubled to 2MB Power saving features

Making fashion accessories out of cellphones is a great idea. Samsung wants to take the lead and -in my opinion- fails miserably by launching the Anna Sui version of the Samsung E315. The phone is sold for $250. Tips to Samsung: Do the Designer thing on a high-end cellphone, that doesn't look cheap. Remove the antenna. For $250, you can get the Motorola RAZR on Amazon (after rebate), celebrities actually do have that one.
The Inquirer writes: "Shuttle said its XPC SB83G5 is aimed at system integrators and enthusiasts, and comes with XPC Max Home Theatre software, and integrated TV tuner card, a remote control and a cute little front panel display".
PNY has announced the Vibe 2GB a new digital audio player. Features include support for both MP3 and WMA files, SRS-WOW enhanced sound processing, custom equalizer, FM radio and Voice Recorder. The Battery (a single AAA) will last 12 hours. Price: $299, Ship in Q2 2005.
BIOS writes: "Creative's I-Trigue 3600 speakers are targeted at those who demand a great design and performance to match. Unfortunately, whilst the two satellite speakers do indeed look fantastic with their slim profile and matching metal stands, they sound dull and lifeless and are outperformed by many similarly-priced hi-fi speakers. The I-Trigue 3600 set should only be considered if style is more important than performance, or if you're prepared to compromise."

The clock was ticking for the PDAs, after a few rough years and a retreat from Sony and Sharp from the US market, Sony has announced the end of its Clie line of PDA. "although this is the end of the CLIE platform, the concept of a 'portable entertainment information terminal' will continue" (Sony). It's sad because the Clie PDAs have been a great line of products. However, it is becoming increasingly hard for PDAs to resist the advance of smartphones such as the Treo 650 and others. The best PDA is the one that you have with you, and you will always carry a cellphone, because of its killer application: voice (shocker). Next target: the iPod?Expect Sony's Press Release to hit US shores soon...
This Samsung 50” DLP TV has what it takes to make your movie evening great: HDMI digital connection, TruSurround XT (more surround than surround, lol), a 2000:1 contrast ratio and an integrated EPG (Electronic Program Guide). Why do we have to subscribe to digital cable to get this?
TDK calls it Photo Quality Inkjet Printable Disc. The surface of this DVD media has been designed to be printed on with an inkjet color. It works with printers that have a disc printing feature and should look much better than the cheap-looking stickers that are in use today.
Canon has announced the successor to the popular EOS 300D Digital camera. The new 8.0-Megapixel camera is 10 per cent lighter and 25 per cent smaller by volume than the EOS 300D Digital and incorporates many new features introduced with the EOS 20D Digital. Powered by the same DIGIC II image processor found in Canon's professional series Digital SLR cameras, the EOS 350D Digital features a 3 frame-per-second, 14-frame burst operation, USB 2.0 Hi-Speed interface, simultaneous RAW and Large JPEG writing and a fast 0.2 second start-up time.
Just a quick post to let you know that the S710a from Sony Ericsson is available on the Cingular Website. The retail price was set at 549.99 with a 2 years contract at the time of this article. This is way too expensive, even for this cool phone. It is listed on Amazon at 269.99 (after rebate, or 419.99 without rebate), but is flagged as “not stocked or discontinued”. Amazon usually cell phones with a 1-year contract, so I would strongly recommend waiting until Amazon sells it, rather than getting it from Cingular.

Sony is launching its DSC-H1 a 5 megapixel digital camera with an impressive 12X zoom capability. This optical zoom as a focal range of 36 - 432 millimeters (a 35mm equivalence) and with the Sony's Super Steady Shot® optical image stabilization feature that counteracts camera-shake you can shoot sharp images. This feature benefits the longer shutter speed of the DSC_H1 used in low-light condition, reducing the risk of image blur from camera-shake. It has also a 32 MB of internal memory which is quite cool…
After speculating that the iPod mini (and all the other iPods) would come with a color screen soon, Thinksecret now thinks that it might have video games as well. This job posting on game developer site Gamasutra gives it all: "experience working with embedded systems" who would in part be "responsible for rapidly developing memory and performance optimized software solutions to complex problems." "2D or 3D graphics programming" is the third and final optional qualification.
Push to View (PTV) is the latest attempt by wireless operators (LG in this case) to make 3G useful to the masses. It works just like push-to-talk, a well known feature in the US. PTV lets you send an audio/video stream to your friends who are also equipped with proper 3G phones. If the phones have good cameras and if the speed is acceptable, I think that this might be fun. At least, it attracts me much more than watching TV on my phone...
Swedish company Adamond has the first 2GB flash-based MP3 Player. This cute little device is compatible with the following music format: MP3, WMA, ASF, OGG. It also plays FM radio and connects via USB. The screen is an OLED, feature that will spark "wooo" and "wows". Hey guys, it's just a bi-chromatic screen :)
It's not fun when a drained battery prevents you from becoming the next "Starfighter". If there's no replacement battery around, Gametech has a solution: the manual charger for the Nintendo DS. 3 minutes of cranking the charger will give you 20 minutes of play. Did someone thought about doing a version with pedals? I don't know how long it will take to kill the final boss!

I had been using a 4GB Hitachi Microdrive to replace a 2GB Pretec Flashcard in my digital camera for two weeks, so I thought that I might as well share my experience. The reason that I bought a microdrive is that it has a better GigaBytes/dollar ratio (bang for the buck) than flash cards. Note that microdrives are about 1mm thicker than regular flash cards, so make sure that your device is compatible with a microdrive before buying one. Considering that microdrives are usually slower than high-end flash cards, is there any sensitive difference when shooting photos? I tried shooting at 5 frames par second with a Canon 20D (highest resolution, fine JPEG quality) and I did not notice any performance drop. Most cameras have an internal buffer where they store the photos before writing them to the card. This would explain why it's not slower.
The Motorola A1010 is a smartphone that might make a lot of users happy. It's a 3G WCDMA world phone packed with productivity applications. It should be available in Q4 2005. Here are the specs.
The Rolleiflex 6008 AF is a very high end digital camera that uses the 6x6 medium format that offers rapid and precise auto-focus thanks to its dedicated AF lenses. It shoots 16 Megapixel photos, weighs 1.5Kg (!) and has dimensions of 143 x 139 x 124 mm (no lens). I'm pretty sure that I won't be buying this one anytime soon...
The Cabir mobile phone virus, born in the Philippines, has reached the US according to experts. The most noticeable annoyance of the virus is that it drains batteries by constantly trying to send itself to other phones via the Bluetooth wireless protocol. At the moment, the virus is not really a big danger. Because of the disparity of the phone Operating Systems the virus can only affect a fraction of the phones in circulation. As standardization kicks in the mobile world, it will be easier for virus writers to target one dominant platform to get a maximum impact. Obviously, the more capable the phone is, and the easier it is to write a virus for it, so smartphones will be the first targets on the list.
