Printed Human Tissue

Posted on Feb 11, 05 02:43 AM PDT

Printable Human TissueScientists have created a printer that could allow them to "print" human skin.

The technology is not ready to be commercialized yet, but it works by cultivating a patient's cells and suspend them in a nutrient-rich liquid (the "ink") that will be used by the printer. To better reproduce the skin, it is possible to "print" using many different types of cells. It's limited only by the number of heads that the printer has.

It might eventually be possible to create more complex structures such as bones and organs. "In theory, you could print the scaffolding to create an organ in a day, but we are not quite there yet," (Brian Derby)
