JVC MP-XV841US Sub-Notebook Review

JVC proves that a laptop definitely doesn't need to be large to be a good multimedia machine. Measuring a scant 9.2 x 8.5 x 1.2 inches and weighing just 3.2 pounds with its battery attached, JVC's new MP-XV841US can slip into anyone's briefcase, carry-on, or backpack. Even its AC adapter is incredibly lightweight and compact.

While it certainly can't be classified as a speed demon when it comes to 3D games, the MP-XV fared much better than we expected. The motion in games was a bit choppy, but not so much they were unplayable, as long as we set the detail as low as possible. A 3DMark2001 score of 2,917 at the system's maximum resolution of 1024 x 600 bore this out. (Continued below)

Considering how incredibly portable JVC made the MP-XV841US without sacrificing performance or an optical drive, this mini-notebook definitely belongs on the radar of highly mobile executives. But this mini notebook's cramped keyboard and tiny 8.9-inch display somewhat limit the JVC's appeal.

Pros
• Incredibly compact and lightweight
• Terrific battery runtime
• Bright widescreen perfect for DVDs

Cons
• Keyboard way too small for touch typists
• Battery protrudes awkwardly
• Mediocre speakers
