The Wacom SlimPen could make touch screens obsolete

Posted on Apr 25, 05 02:23 AM PDT

Today, most PDAs and Tablet PCs are equipped with touch screens. The display basically has a sensor that knows where the user touches it. What if someone moves the sensing from the display into the pen? That's what Wacom wants to do with their SlimPen. It uses an electro-magnetic system to guess where the pen point is, relative to the screen surface.

I'm not sure that I would like that. For one, I've lost a couple of pens, so I hope that the smart ones won't be too expensive. Secondly, I use my fingers a lot with my PDA, especially when I drive using the GPS navigation system. The last thing that I want is to have to use a pen while driving.
