Samsung shows world´s first 40 inches OLED TV

Samsung Electronics has developed a single-sheet, 40in. active matrix (AM) organic light-emitting diode (OLED). The technology promises bigger but thinner television will be a reality in the future, and the ultra-thin shape of the panels will allow future TV set designers to create televisions with a total thickness of only 3cm or less.

OLEDs also use less energy than LCDs and deliver better resolution. The OLED prototype has a widescreen pixel format of 1280x800 pixels (WXGA) driven by an amorphous silicon (a-Si) AM backplane. It offers a maximum screen brightness of 600 nits, black-and-white contrast ratio of 5000:1, and a colour gamut of 80 per cent. Samsung has been slowly growing the size of its OLED screens.

Last year it announced a 14.1in. WXGA (1280x768) OLED panel, followed by the 21in. HD-class (1920x1080) OLED panel in January, 2005.
