via Slashphone Yau Jia Xin, 9, underwent successful heart surgery today, thanks to the power of the short messaging service (SMS) and the generosity of the public. A family friend sent an SMS to her list of contacts seeking O-negative type blood donors, and soon the SMS propogated to the rest of the public. The vast network of contacts tapped by a single SMS proved enough for a group of people to extend their help. 3 persons of the correct blood type donated and Yau underwent a successful surgery. One word of caution though: one should always validate such SMS before taking any action.
