The Archos AV500 is shaping up to be a rather mean machine. The specs listed below are meant for the no-frills version, so do expect a powerhouse with 100GB worth of storage space and 15 hours of video playback time in the higher spectrum of the AV500 series. Pundits have a guesstimate that the AV500 will retails for around $500 (£349). Here are some details about the upcoming Archos AV500 portable media player:

• 4” (10.2cm) screen with 10.2cm visible screen size
• 262,000 colours and 16:9 screen format
• Record directly from your TV, VCR, DVD player, cable box or satellite receiver
• Can store up to 120 hours of video, 300,000 pictures, 16,500 songs or 30Gb of data
• View and store photos via a USB connection
• Record audio analog source in WAV or WAV ADPCM and playback MP3, WMA (including protected contents) and WAV music files
• Timer record facility to make scheduled recordings
• Voice recorder with built in microphone

• Format compatibility: MP3, WMA, Protected PlaysForSure™ WMA, WAV, MPEG4 (SP), WMV and protected PlaysForSure™ WMV, BMP and JPEG compatible. DivX® and MPEG-4 playback with a maximum resolution of 720 x 576 pixels at 25f/s in PAL.
• Interfaces: USB 2.0 high speed, compatible USB 1.1, PC and Mac.
• USB host port compatible with USB camera, USB card reader or USB hard drives.
• Operation: Battery operated with internal lithium ion rechargeable battery (supplied), 230v AC mains via adaptor (supplied) or 12v car battery via cigarette lighter.
• Up to 15 hours music playback or 5 hours video playback on each battery charge.
