iPod in short supply - reality or marketing ploy?
Posted on Nov 4, 05 01:49 PM PDT

Business week has an article about how the iPod demand is surpassing the supply, hence marking another great success for Apple. While a shortage might be legitimate, it is also surprising that the iPod video, which uses industry standard components, would have such a shortage. After all, from the hard drives to the display, nothing in the new iPod is so cutting-edge that it would be difficult to mass-produce. Similar components are present in many other devices, and none of these are in short supply. Additionally, Apple has not disclosed how many units they’ve sold so far – that adds to the confusion. Don’t get me wrong, the new iPod is selling very well, but I have to wonder if this highly-publicized shortage is not part of the marketing campaign designed to create a sense of urgency to buy an iPod, while they are still available. If I was right, well done Apple, you also saved millions from your Marketing budget because the press will help you to create the buying panic.
