I have tried but i have the most recent firmware. and i really do not want to do the manual installation. is there another os or some other way to play movies on first gen ipod nano. it has been buggin me for months. is it possible to downgrade firmware i have heard of it but have not been able to do it. is it possible to play movies through rockbox cuz i am dual booting that but i want to tripple boot. jsheph01@gmail.com

you can try going to the store that has to do with ipods they with help you but if not hold the menu button and the middle circle but together and it should restart but your music wont go away how you know it restarted is by when a little apple appears on the screen

all you need to do to undo the freeze is to slid the power button back and forth really fast twice then hold the menu button till the screen goes dark you are resetting it and then you turn it off and then on and it sound work

I dunno bout it, that looks oddly enough like a video ipod anyway? I only got a 2gb nano and it doesn't have the rounded corners such as that one(which the video's got) but hey if im talkin out my a** then let me know but im skeptical. A simple video that hardly proves that it is in fact a nano doesnt help!

Hey cyberchicken.
I don't think that there are any long term risks, you can just reinstall the iPod software and reinstall all your songs. Also, this will NOT work on a second generation iPod, only the ones with a silver back. I have a 2nd gen nano, and it is really frustrating.
As I have said, i don't believe there to be any long term issues with the status of your iPod.

Your iPOD lamo 4 GB will never play videos as it was not designed to do so. You will either crush it and will need to restore, or succeed but play 1 hour video on mini screen damaging the iPOD nano display and hardware. Such iPODs will not serve u for long. Is it worth the risk? If u r insane about the video buy the appropriate gadget damn it.

hey cyberchicken, you know that if you screw up with linux on ur iPod that you can just get iTunes7 at www.apple.com and do a restore for it to set it to factory defaults, lol. that's what i did, even if you screw up ur iPod there is really NO WAY to perminatly damage it

i have been trying unsuccessfully to install
iPodLinux on my new iPod Nano 2G.
1. i tried numerous installers from Windows
but they all failed to detect the iPod.
they keep saying that the iPod is not
connected or that they could not locate
the iPod disk. this even when Explorer
and iTunes find the iPod.
2. i tried installation from Linux. that also
failed. i was able to repartition the iPod
but when i attempted to extract the Apple
firmware using make_fw, i get only 40 bytes.
i tried this from Windows and from Linux.
my configuration:
- iPod Nano 2G
- iTunes 7.0.2
any ideas?

this is really cool, i have done some backround research and i found that it is difficult to install if you are not good with computers. does anyone know if there is a setup program that does it all for you? that would be a really good idead.

when i tried to install ipodlinux it tried to delete all of my songs so i wouldn't try it if i were you but its up to you if you want to take the risk of losing all of your nano's songs;););)

ipodlinux installer says it cannot find ipod when first opened. itunes7 puts a block on the ipod nano keeping it from being used with other programs. I was told to use apple updater instead, yet even the updater itself isn't supported any more by Apple. They pretty much make you use itunes7 for use of the updater/restore. Cannot find a way around this.

DONT INSTALL IPODLINUX ON YOUR NANO!!!!
i had it once, but i began noticing that the screen was beginin to burn (as in becomin darker and darker because when playing a video the nano overheats)
the nano wasnt meant for playing videos, it doesnt have the same structure or hardware than the ipod video, thus, it will overheat your nano and damage it.

don't use itunes to put videos on your modded nano. just create a folder on the root called "videos" and put your avi videos in there. then in file browser just select them to play them.
and btw, if anything does go wrong with installing linux, you can always restore your ipod through apple ipod updater. there hasn't been 1 report of an ipod that got messed up and couldn't be restored.

after hours on end i got linux to work . you must follow every detail to the max. its not worth it. i had it on for a while then realized no one cares about video thats on a screen thats an inch and a half big. Linuxis good, ipod nano and linux suck. not worth the time

hay if anyone can provide a more in depth tutorial thad be great. ive killed my ipod twice because once i get up to the command prompt part things go wrong, i do everything step by step like it says but my command promp "aes is not a recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch file". then i get what others say, the black screen w/blue writing and all that.
oh and now im kinda scared to keep trying because you can , after like trying 4 times restore your ipod just it seems like it gets harder each time.

if u have an ipod nano and have stuffed it up doing things that void waranty then i suggest you plug in the dock connector then run 12volts through the two outer pins in the other side in the usb port this should completely wreck the ipod then when you take it to apple the wont know what has happened and will hopefully give a new one. i have heard this method works

I just got the linux working correctly this evening. It works beautiful! Had to restore the nano quite a few times because of some bad instructions. When you see a folder and an exclamation point with a url to go to apple, your ipod is NOT dead lol... .I will try my best to help out anyone that I can, just drop me an email as i have it above.

Hello all,
The process to get linux on your iPod is not an undertaking for people who don't know a whole lot about file structures etc... If you feel comfortable enough installing the software, I'd say go to iPodlinux.com and finding the wiki on how to do it. It's very simple IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. But, if you don't know what a wiki is, don't push forward.

Hey, if you lot who have broken your ipods still cant get it fixed then try getting a linux live CD (I suggest slax)and booting it on your computer, then just format it, then go back to windows or mac os x then just do a compleate restore, i buggerd mine up badly and ive fixed it now.

Don't bother installing iPod linux simply to get video on your iPod Nano. The only format that will play in iPod Linux is Uncompressed AVI which will fill a 4 GB ipod with less than 1 half hour of video. Rumor says the iPod nano will support video in the upcomming iPod updater version.

^^^^^^I Fixed My iPod! thanks to Patrick (#39). i thought i was doomed but if u do ctl+alt+del and close ipodservice.exe..then do the ipod update...it works! before, i thought closing the ipodservice.exe thing wouldnt make a diff...but it worked. thanks! don'y give up if you think yours is broken!

From reading most of these threads, most of the people wanted to put linux on their Ipod nano and messed it up sound like they are lamers trying to do something out of their capabilities. But for the people that have it done and running good its a great inovation. And I know you guys aren't Lamers like those other fools who don't know how to reboot their Ipods and are crying about it being broken. Why would apple make a product and not make a program that sets it back to normal DUH! Oh well I own a Creative Zen and I have not Problems what so ever But One word of advice is, if your too dumb to figure this out then leave it be. "Don't Fix it if it ain't broke!"

Everyone's saying that this messes up your ipod. i had it happen to me once on my 5th gen. If your running windows, then do a ctrl+alt+delete and go to the processes tab. click on ipodservice.exe and click end. then open up the ipod updater and restore your ipod. at least thats how i fixed mine.

I have been using ipodlinux on my nano for two months.
Installing linux will not mess up your ipod. ANY problem is fixable with the hp format tool and the apple update software. Those that THINK they have broken their ipod are simply too stupid and/or lazy to search ipodlinux.org and find a solutions to their problems.
To those that haven't even tried it and say that it will break the ipod, go f**k yourself; you have no idea what you're talking about.

If you mess up your ipod, it is fixable (you can't brick it), But you will haev to rebuild your ipods partion table.

I messed up my ipod to. I tried the hp reformating too, and it says that there is no media in the drive. Ive tried all the key combinations and everything. Windows wont let me format it from the my computer folder ether.

did you try using that hp USB format thingymagig. its sposed to work. i broke my ipod and i sent it back but then i found the HP usb format utility on the internet after id finished being hysterical about my ipod being broken:D but then id allready got a new one so alot of use that was:P well what i read is when you get it your pormat your ipod then boot it into safe mode and then run the updater. it sounds easy enuf

U can use this website to install linux on your nano. It works perfextly and you can switch betwen linux or the apple software when you restart your ipod. if something goes wrong you could always resstore your ipod to factory settings.

4GB is good enough for me. I've been able to fit alot of videos on my 1GB PSP. Oh right and if you install linux on it will you be able to use the iPod updater to put it back to its factory state or will it not let you?

Well i finally got my ipod to run linux and its great but for some reason i cant get i tunes to detect my ipod. but at least it works. but it took me a week to hunt down all the correct files to do so. for an ipod nano theres a special tutorial complete with files you need to do it. its out there some where. THERES STILL HOPE. and i can cope without iTunes. i think its actually quite trash actually. so i just copy the music straight to the root folder of my ipod. so if you like itunes then dont try this. :D

ipod linux ey. well, ive only just cought on to this and i have an ipod nano 2g black but if you have an ipod nano then i wouldent install linux on it unless you are willing to take the risk. i tryed it but it ended up messing up my ipod. so i wouldent keep your hopes up but you may get a nasty suprise if it all goes horibbly rong!

I've actually only just seen this - wondered why I was getting so many emails about playing videos on the nano!
Yes, it's real. But the videos have to be uncompressed AVIs in a very specific format. I wouldn't go chucking out your iPod 5G just yet (unless you want to send it to me, of course.) :)
