New Zen Vision has more advanced CODECs than the iPod video
Posted on Dec 7, 05 01:30 AM PDT
Creative is going to launch its anti-iPod video device in Japan in about 10 days. The portable media player has a cheaper look than the iPod, is a bit bigger and weighs more… but it supports many more video formats:
• MPEG1/2/4
• WM9 (Windows Media)
• Motion JPEG (pretty much useless)
• DivX 4/5
It remains to be seen if this apparent lush of video decode capabilities can turn into a competitive advantage. It’s not clear to me where the content will come from. Apple has a growing number of movies/shows to sell for a reasonable price. Creative Japan via akihabaranews (fr)

Actually Alan the iPod can easily load and view photos directly from a digital camera using a £15 accessory. I do this regullarly.

I am more interested as to whether this device is computer agnostic and a sophisticated indexing system. And of course, storage. My first Player was a Creative Jukebox 10 Gig. Big and bulky, but it worked well and has great sound. It has limited firmware capabilities though. I will never get an iPod as long as it marries one computer at a time. I am not interested in my devices having monogamous relationships with only one computer. Also I would Like to know if I can upload digital photographs directly from my camera to this device. The iPod cant do that. It has to go through a computer first. Boo iPod!
