Zen Vision:M to steal iPod´s thunder

Zen Vision:M to steal iPod's thunder
Creative’s Zen Vision:M will remove all bad memories of the Zen Neeon relaunch. This $350 device is a tad more expensive than the G5 iPod, but it comes with an adapter unlike the iPod USB power adapter that is available as an option. Sound quality is excellent with a powerful and tight base line, while video quality suffered under bright sunlight but performed brilliantly indoors. Battery life is fantastic, as the Vision:M scored an extra hour at 15 compared to the given specs of 14 hours for a full MP3 loop. Watch out, iPod! CNet via Digital Media Thoughts

:D yall are so stuck into Apple. The Zen Vision is retailing at the EXACT SAME PRICE as the iPod, and has achieved many accolades. The only reason that iPod beat the Zen Vision M in a CNet poll was because "It's an iPod", abut the reviewers said they favor Creative's technology INSIDE the product. The creative is MUCH BETTER.

Basically the IPOD gloaters followed the band wagon and bought a their IPOD. Sure it is a well designed device. Yet most of the reasons stated by people for it being superior, have nothing to do with what the device is actually used for. Who cares if its a few milimeters larger. If it provides more fuctionality it is the superior device. You are only flamming everything except for the Ipod because you already invested your money in it.

so, just out of curiosity the people slamming the creative, did you ever own one? did you ever try one? or are you just so stuck up on the fact that you think the ipod is just ever so perfect???? well, I have several friends who made the mistake of getting an ipod, and let me say, if I was limited to what is it, 3 computers to get my music off of , ever, I would be pissed off....I can plug my player in where ever I want, whenever I want, with whatever program, and it transfers at the speed of light....My battery has awesome life, which too bad we can't say about the ipod, yeah its a little bigger, but with all the drawbacks the ipod comes with, who cares!!!! And I dont care how much more expensive a creative is, I would pay that money with out a doubt...I have the creative zen vision m, and it is the best thing I have even owned, it kicks ipods ass...and I can say that because I have compared them...my brother has a pile of his friends ipods in his room for fixing....hmmmmm....
so all you ipod suckers, I hope you enjoy...Its the smarter of us who know how to pick the best...

Best MP3 I've ever had. The extra size doesn't really make a difference. O **** it weighs more, o crap it can fit in my pocket. The vid iPod can play HALF the vid hours the zvm can. The iPod Vid is a joke.

Look you Apple sniffies, the specs alone say it all. Thanks to Ronan here for his unwanted correction on CES. My two cents? Who cares about the "CES is not a word"? All I know is the Creative does exactly what I want which the Apple does not like optional radio with an added expensive add on and clip on bulk. Sure the Creative is bigger, but get real! It's not much bigger. So you're gonna have to lift a few more ounces. (Yaawwhhnn... big deal!) Stop being such cry babies. Buy the product for your needs. If Apple did what I needed. I'd buy an Apple and not necessarily slam the competing product.

You nitwits on this board are going to have to find something worthwhile debating other than mine's bigger or better than yours. This tech debate is a moot point.

Anyhow, I think both Apple and Creative did great. Made products people actually like and want. So get over it folks. To each his own!

I bought both the apple ipod and zen vision m to compare side by side and keep the best one.
The zen vision m won hands down!
The zen scored higher in:
Longer battery life
faster re-charge time
plays many video formats (ipod plays only 1)
plays all my mp3's without re-encoding for the ipod.
& BEST OF ALL!!!!
I dont have to subscribe to itunes to listen to MY MUSIC!

Any Idiot will be able to tell that creative has the "technologically more advanced product"..... But i have to agree that the Ipod's design is just great...

And for all u people who didn't know, a portion of the money that u Ipod people out there pay for your ipods goes to creative for their "MP3 player" patents! haha...

I think the Zen just Rocks...!!! Go Creative!!!

incidently.

For repairs for my ipod that broke, apple quoted me £160 for repairs for exactly the minor problem i had under warranty, three and a half months ago, at which point they sent me a second hand replacement ipod, which is now broken.

I would rather get something slightly bigger but more reliable and cheaper to repair

so there

I think that you all need to open your eyes to the fact. Ipod don't raise the bar each time they release something. It's because they pinch the research patented by Creative Labs. Now Creative have won the court case gaining the patent, lets see how long it is before your precious ipods have to be redesigned. And its about time Creative took a few tips from apple because until now they have not come close. But they may well have just beaten them at their own game now. So get ready for a quick releasing of a new ipod because apple may worry that Creative may have a chance. And anyway your ipods probably will break down before such an event.

As for the facts.

Ipod has a 65000 colours to Creatives 270000,
so the screen positively bursts with all that colour the ipod lacks

It has better sound quality and video output quality.

Yet Ipods have the better software and a slighty sleeker design.

But ipods seem to break more, for example, when i sent mine back for repair, the guy told me he picked up 20 in my neighbourhood every week.

Which ever you go for its up to you. Ipods may be easier to use, be easier to use, but creatives beats it hands down on the specs.

Enjoy your purchases

ok, I was an iPod user until creative relased the new zen. I have owned an ipod photo and ipod video. It is a good device with its own flaws. I've seen this first hand as I have been working at either best buy or circuit city for the past three years. I have seen the technology and dealt with many problems. I pod's DO have a high failure rate but are sold at a much higer rate also. So it hard to make a full comparison. In the end, although they are similar products, we are comparing apples and oranges. To say that the iPod is best just because its sold more is kind of naive. There are design flaws and triumphs. The same goes with the creative zen. I only stuck with ipod because it was the only device at the time that had ALL of the features that I wanted (color screen, high capacity HD, etc) AND was in my price range. My ipod video recenly died on me so I'm changing devices. I've had the zen for few weeks and I love it. It has good sound, and it outputs video at a higher resolution (640x480 TVout vs Ipod 320x240 TVout). The screen itself has the same res but nicer colors.

Okay..so all this debate about the zen vision being oh that tiny bit thicker and heavier is rubbish!!!

Here come the facts....
The 3rd generation i-pod was exactly the same thickness and width as the zen vision.
I didn't see anyone complaning about it then.
What is it with everyone?
Has everyones pockets shrunk by what..8mm in the last year. Its all ridiculous.
I have a green zen vision:M and it is way more comfortable to hold in your palm than an i-pod video.....see for yourselves..Yaay go creative, please zen is way better, trust me!

This has been a very interesting site to read I have looked at the ipod's and some other MP3 players and frankly, I am not impressed with the ipod. It is a good size but I know several people who have various iterations of the ipod and not only is it a bitch when you have to get the battery replaced (and expensive) and itunes is for ****. The ipods are fragile as all hell as well. And, back to the battery thing, Apple does not want you to be able to service your old ipod. They want all the lemmings to go and buy new ones every 15 months. The ipod is a good product but it's alot of hype, overpriced and technically behind some other players.

I need something that plays MP3's and has an FM radio. I travel quite a bit and having a radio is handy. I have seen plug-in radios for the ipod and they run like $50. Screw that. I do not NEED video but it would be nice to have. The Creative unit looks much better than the ipod video since it has 4X as many colors and a larger screen.

I have checked other units as well. I have checked into some sony units and you have to convert your MP3's into sony's crap ass proprietary format. Some of the reviews I have read just said the sony software sucked in general and you can't take stuff off the sony and put it on your PC. I don't need big brother watching over what I put on my portable music player.

I saw a sansung unit that played video but it had a 1.8" screen. That's a little too small.

I have had good luck with past creative products so, between my readings here, my personal experience and research, and reviews written by others, I think the creative gets the nod.

Only reason the ipod is more popular and slighlty smaller is because apple has plenty of money for advertising and to slim down the weight slightly, but im sure all of you punny nerds arms will get tired from carying around an extra 4ounces if you read this http://www.everythingusb.com/creative_zen_vision:m_30gb.html you will see how much better the vision:M is the video play back quality is 10x better the battery life is WAY better you can easly watch 2 full length movies(about1 hour 40 minutes) and then listen to music with battery to spare. Your all just biased apple loving idiots go out side the box and look at the facts yeah maybe an ipod will get you some status "OH look he has an ipod he must be cool!"
well in my opinion vision:M is the way to go

you apple people are drones. You thinking that apple invented the mp3/video player just shows that you do not do your own research or think for yourselfs. It all comes down to advertising ,trends and what is cool at the moment for you guys.
I do not give a crap if you have an iPod or a Zen. They are both great products. It comes down to freedom for me. With the iPod you are stuck with iTunes. With the Zen you have Napster To GO,Yahoo To Go(and 79 cent downloads), Rapsity To Go, along with WalMart 88 cent downloads, just to name a few.
I bought a 30gb iPod for my daughter and a Zen for me. She likes the look of the iPod better but she only has about 60(1 buck ea.) iTunes songs and 10(2 bucks ea) music videos.
That is 80 bucks in less that a month.
I have 2200 new songs for 15 dollors a month.
I also have FM radio and I do use it everyday. It also records FM radio,so I can record interveiws, sermons, ect. It also has a really good voice recorder that I use in song writing, and recording meetings and lectures.
It also has a calander with day planning, contact list.
You can also change the brighness of the screen for longer bat. life.,sleep timer, alarm.
I really like how you can. chage the desktop wallpaper. I took a pic of Starbucks lighted sign and that is my background.

When it comes down to it the video/picture is just fluff. The music is what it is mostly about. If you can afford 1 dollar for every song you put on your iPod then get an iPod.
If you are too broke making all the oil tycoons rich, then you might consider a Play for Sure product such as the Zen. I love mine and I know that I made a very good choice.

Okay, listen up for all of you iPod obsessed folk. 1 year ago, I bought the iPod mini. One year. 365 days. A year later and basically 4 models later, we are at a video iPod. Now think about that. If I were to buy every single iPod that had come out just because it had one or two more perks, I could have wasted over $1000. On top of that, the videos and songs you must pay for through iTunes is a ridiculous scam. If I am ever at a point in my life in which I am paying a dollar for a song, I might take a paper shredder and shred bill by bill. Now, if you are telling me that the only difference between the Zen and the iPod is the FM tuner, you are horribly mistaken. Lets, for example, talk about the iPodTV extra plug you need to pay for to plug your damn iPod into a tv. $20? Now we are even. A new battery? $200 dollars if it runs out or aprox. $20 for a wall jack. You can talk, iPod this and iPod that, but in the end, you are still paying for a BRAND NAME. It's all about the word iPod on that hunk of metal you are buying that is costing you all of that money, in comparison to the Zen, in which you are paying for quality. Go on, continue to blow Bill Gates.

Buenos Vacaciones.

Anyone who ever got any model of any apple product ever has no clue about anything. The video s***ks so much. If you are going to buy a player for videos, it should play videos right? Not the ipod. I have 16 gigs of video(seasons of shows, some whole movies, me and my friends snowboarding...) NONE of it is in mp4 format, and never will be. Once you convert the videos, the battery craps out at 2 hours. The vision M Has 4 hours of battery, and plays all the formats people acutally use. Video out is a very big thing for me too. I wouln't have to carry around dvds, just plug the player into the tv. 480 res looks like ****, svcds are notably worse than dvds (vision M is like dvd compared to svcd) As for audio, it also supports wma's. If you really buy a player for audio, and have anywhere near 30 gigs of music, I'm sure some of it is in wma. Drag and drop is another reason to get the creative. Itunes is one of the worst programs I've ever used. So why does anyone get a ipod? Its a trendy thing. No other reason anyone would buy an ipod. They have nothing about them that is better then other players. Oh big **** its 7mm thicker, 7mm>converting all my videos, horrible video support, bad battery life, scratches with silk, 4 times less colors on screen.

First of all, yeah it s***ks that you have to convert most of your videos for ipod compatabillity, but the max resolution isn't 320x240, the max res on an iPod Video is 480x368, which has the capability of looking excellent, similar to an SVCD which is 480*480 laterz hoes

Wow i can see there are alot of bias ipod fans. which i must addmit i was too. But i have recently bought the new Zen vision which after testing out compared to the ipod is leagues ahead. Sure it may be thicker, and look similar to the ipod, but when it has DOUBLE the play back hours, many more features, more than tripple the screen resolution and can support any format of video and music. It is surely a better buy. the CEO of creative claimed that we could have made the player thinner, but the features of better battery life better resolution and the additional features were more important. Btw of course it is going to look similar, You expect them to put the Buttons on the side and the screen on the back?

Wat is the Ergonomical use of that. The interface on the zen is way more user friendly with being able to personalize themes wallpapers and the biggest bonus is being able to edit and delete songs on the player. Also instead of having to scroll FOREVER throuhg artists u can search or just jump to the letter of the artist u want. You can not say the buttons are similar, they are totally different. To me it seems like all you ipod fans have to think out side the box and consider both sides. it just seems like you are all regretting buying the ipod video before the Zen was released. Actually Think about it guys, i did and iam now reaking the benefits of the Zen Vision: M

I encourage everyone that is gloating about the Ipod to read some more detailed reviews about the Zen Vision M and compare the specifications to their Ipod Video.
- The Zen Vision accepts more video formats people actually use (and doesn't force you to re-encode all of your movies for your device)
- more audio formats (choice where you want to buy your music and not ONLY Itunes)
- 262,000 colors and 640x480 video resolution (compared to 65,000 colors and 320x240) the difference is HUGE when you are not only comparing the 2 side by side, but also on the TV (320x240 is very poor quality ona TV, Zen Vision M looks twice as good)
- Features - customize backgrounds and themes, FM radio, microphone, can be used as a jump drive, subscription music service support, playlists on the fly, and the list goes on.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but most of the people buying an Ipod have no clue what they are buying! (I have sold a ton of Ipods in the store and it is true) Quite often when I worked retail, when I showed the customers the "other mp3 players" they were often surprised that any other mp3 players existed besides the Ipod.
So to all the Ipod purchasers out there (I have owned Ipods and other mp3 players) RESEARCH BEFORE YOU BUY! There are much better devices out there! More support, more features, better sound quality and the $329 price ALSO includes the power adapter, which is an EXTRA $29.99 for your Ipod Video. Once you own it (I was able to see and play with one at CES) you will be blown away and wish you didn't buy your Ipod. At least everyone at CES felt this way about the product. Zen Vision M won Best of Show for ALL product catagories BTW.
Cheers!

Alright. You people want the truth? Apple wins in size, design, popularity, and in support. It loses in battery reliability, screen colors, scratched screens, customization, and file support. Anyone with media addition (or a pc for that matter) doesnt want to take the time to convert everything into quicktime's crap. iTunes is still the best pay service, but their file types are so restrictive, they should be sued (Oh, yeah... they were). They copied creative. Yes. As much as all those iPod pansies would like to believe, the creative browsing technique was developed first in their Jukebox line. I picked up an iPod and was like, "this is almost the same as my buddy's jukebox". Curious. That is why Creative Labs is now suing Apple. Anyway... the Zen radios get better reception than my car, the vision:m has twice the playback life as the iPod, the screen has over 100,000 more colors, and the device is fully customizable from wallpapers to color schemes. Before you post on here complaining about Creative, go to:

The Ipod s***ks. Everyone thinks its better but it s***ks. The battery life only lasts about a year, their is no radio, you have to use I-tunes, you have to buy seperate charger if you don't want to use the usb, and it has less video formats. Sure the Ipod is a little thiner but who cares. Its not much more expensive either this site has it for 309.99. http://www.compuplus.com/i-Creative-Labs-ZEN-VisionM-30GB-Black-MP3-Player-70PF169000001-1006021~refer-froogle.html#description. "And, it's double the thickness of the iPod "

So when did a Creative Zen Vison:M that is 19mm, and a Ipod Video that is 11mm thick become double the thickness? I think you need to go back to math class man.

I did purchase a Zen while at CES this year for 279.99 plus 4.95 s&h they had a show discount on all products.

It is very cool since it works with Napster To Go (which I use), I get unlimited downloads a month for $15, unlike you iTunes fellows who pay per song. The device also works with Tivo To Go on Series 2 device Tivo's (when DirecTv offers this I will be good).

Also while at the show I got to compare a video right to the M, and there is not much difference that I can see really as far as size and what not. However the advantage I saw with the M was the 640x480 resolution on an output, that is huge for me since I have a 42in HDTV, do you know what the ipod video resolution looks like on a TV that big! It's absolutly terrible in every way.

Will post more about it when I get it in a few weeks here.

p.s. we could only get black for that price.

Look, I was about to buy an Ipod Video until I seen a Creative Vision - it has a microphone. Which I need, yet it's still not as cool as the
Ipod. Does anyone know if you can, or will eventually be able to connect an audio microphone to the Ipod Video. smokiejoe@hotmail.com

This thing is nothing but an ipod rip off, whoever gets this piece of junk is wasting their money. I had and ipod shuffle and upgraded to a nano, and will soon be purchasing a video ipod, and I won't even think twice about buying this ugly thing before i get my ipod.

You know, I keep reading reviews about the size and look of the Creative Vision M compared to the iPod and must say it's very disappointing.

Do any of you know that once your battery goes out on your iPod they charge you an additional $200!? Creative charges approx. $75. about $50. for the battery and $25. for the installation. I'm ok with that. I purchased the 60 GB {$400.} iPod and have it sitting here in the box. All I'm waiting for is an e-mail that has my RMA #, so that I could send it back ASAP! It's totally ridiculous!

On top of that, I asked Tech Support if I could purchase the extended warranty through Apple being that it covers the battery and they told me, NO!...Can you believe that?! So, if I'm covered by the "1 YEAR" warranty I'm ok, but after that I'm pretty much screwed! Do we honestly think the battery would die in a year? Of course not! Apple is pretty much out there to screw you over! Oh, and the best part of that is that even the Sales Reps don't know this. You have to speak to someone in Tech Support. lol! My goodness! Thieves! For the total price of all of that crap, I can just buy myself a Laptop and carry that around....lol Why would I want to spend $400. on an iPod if in a couple of years I'll have to spend another $200. on a battery. But it's not even the battery, they have to replace the whole iPod. Who would think of such a ridiculous product? Very disappointed in Apple! iTunes is also a piece of crap! Anyway, I just thought you all should know this. Thanks! Happy New Year!

Just because a product is so popular, doesn't make it automatically better (anyone hear of the term "fad" - we all know fads don't last!). Plus, I can't find anywhere on the web that states the Signal to Noise Ratio for the iPod. It's all about the quality of the sound!

My brother works at Best Buy and he says the iPod is the #1 returned item. I've heard numerous complaints about how fragile the iPod is, especially the hard drive. The iPod screen is easily scratched.

Anyways, this whole iPod craze is getting a little too out of hand. All I ever hear is iPod this, iPod that. Everyone wants an iPod, but why? Seems like the only reason iPod is selling is because of all of the Publicity. I would rather stick with a proven company in Creative Labs than go with something that is a fad. That's my 2 cents!

Go Creative Labs!

First of all the Zen Vision:M should have reduce its size by taking away the stupid radio, or at least make it optional. Then try to at least create a brand new layout, it doesn't matter that they have a patient for the layout Ipod beat them to it. Also they should have tried to move away from the Ipod look or at least beat the ipod in more crucial areas, eg. (screen size) which would have made more sense.

me like something new, and creative just do
that for ppl who wants something else diff
than anyithng on the market, ie. ipod.

i know ipod and nothing amaze me about it,
not even this creative, but none of mp3 player
outhere can somehow make something new 'breed',
tho iriver is a good candidates for that.
anyway, to make it short, i was about to
get black ipod 30gb but worry much about
how fragile the device is.
the truth is im up for creative but i need
to get one soon and it seem creative will
launch this player next year .. i just
cant wait.

the price? dont matter.

Hi,

You guys are right: the Creative isn’t much of a danger for the iPod video. FM isn’t really going to make any difference. This post wasn’t meant to five a nod to “anything but iPod”, it was just written in an overly optimistic way and we shall stand corrected. Thanks for the relevant comments.

Yeah real competitive. It costs more but it also weighs more and is larger than an iPod. Is this some new formula? People want to pay more for a larger portable music player?

----Zen 168 g v. iPod 136 g----Zen 104x62x18.6mm v. iPod 104x61x11 mm----Zen $352 v. iPod $299----

Is FM radio worth $53 to you? What a joke.

That is a funny article. Steal iPods thunder? Clearly a case of delusional thinking.

If by 'THUNDER,' you mean a loud but very, very brief noise only to fade away without leaving any sign it was every there - you are right.

Ironically, by designing it to look like an ipod, it will actually raise more questions for the few buyers of the Creative M ...

"Hey is that some beta ipod prototype?"

"If you liked the design so much, why didn't you get an ipod?"

"You couldn't afford an ipod?"

You'll mumble a bunch of arcane specs that only you and the 1% of Remondites care about - a Hundayai looks like a Mercedes from 200 yards away but up close, it's still not an ipod.

Creative is used to selling stuff by specs and they don't anything about any other aspect of a conusmer product. Selling sound blasters & graphics cards to geeks is all about specs but when it doesn't plug inside your home brew PC - everything else matters.

Poor Creative... they just can't get any kind of traction in the market! It must be really tough since Apple continues to raise the bar with each new iteration of their iPod line! Funny how sites like übergizmo feel that they have to give the obligatory nod to anything that resembles competition to the iPod. Too bad that Creative will have to settle for the scraps in the market after the overwhelming majority of people choose an iPod.
