Microsoft takes on iPod
Posted on Jan 31, 06 12:05 AM PDT

Buisness Week reports that Microsoft has decided to tread where many have failed – usurp the throne held by the iPod. Microsoft plans to develop a product that can play music and video, and it will carry the Xbox name. Expanding on the Xbox brand is a logical move, and it will also encroach on Sony’s PSP territory as well in terms of an all-round portable entertainment machine. Via Fraggerock
Publisher’s take: Microsoft could use one deadly move: produce a PSP-like machine with an integrated hard drive.

As of February 2005, Xbox's share of the worldwide console market is far behind the PlayStation 2. According to company documents, Microsoft has shipped 22 million consoles to retailers worldwide at the end of 2005. Although ahead of the GameCube's 18.5 million, this was far behind the PlayStation 2's 100 million shipped.

Actually to date the XBox has achieved no where near the success of the PS2. XBox sales have been far fewer than Microsoft had expected and resulted in an overall loss and not profit for Microsoft. Refer to these sites for further info:

It is Microsoft's practice to undercut competitors in order to outsell them, even if that results in losses for the company:
http://businessweek.com/technology/content/nov2005/tc20051122_410710.htm.
The tactic involves wiping out the competition and being the last man standing. Only then do profits roll in. This frequently leads to inferior products (IE anyone?) that everyone is forced to use. XBox was popular among the small portion of the public comprised of fanatical MS followers and modders. The ability to turn the XBox into a media centre was a plus for this small group. For everyone else the PS2 had better games and many, many more of them. Look to PS3 to continue that trend. One last thing to note; Console systems only do as well as they are popular in Japan. No matter what, gamers in Japan outnumber gamers in Europe or North America drastically. This means that they are the deciding factor of which system will be king. Take a look at there sites for an idea of why PS3 will take that title:

:o Microsoft 1st generation XBOX is better than Sony Playstation II if you guys look at the sells that Microsoft made when it first came out its way higher than Sony when they first release the Playstation II. Microsoft almost hit the profit margin that Playstation 2 did so what are you guys talking about. Plus, they are the one that first release a game console that has a built-in hard drive. So, please do your research first before opening that mouth of yours because criticism don’t lead to anything only downfall. I have Playstation myself and I loved that console but I know XBOX is way better plus look at the graphics alone…it kick ass, on 1st generation XBOX it is already good and now compare it to the NEW XBOX its way better. Comparing the Playstation III and 360 XBOX now that’s a hard decision they are both an awesome console even I can’t really choose between the two. So, that’s it you guys have a great day….

Ipod are great, but definitely not perfect. The next company to release a product with the following will be king:
Good price <$400
Durable design (less scratched cases, flash instead of HDs)
Good sound quality
Good interface
Integrated Bluetooth (ability to interface with cell phones and share bluetooth headset)
Integrated WiFi (802.11g/b/n)
Integrated Radio
Video
:P

There are already media players that play both music and video that are better than the IPod, An example is the IRiver U10 and PMC-120. IPods s**k. Oh and no one else makes you convert to a .acc file either.

Will this Microsoft device crash and be full of bugs like Microsoft Windows? Will we have to pay a license fee for each computer that this device is connected to? Will the device "catch" a virus when it is connected to a Windows system. And will MS want us to "upgrade" the device every 2 years/

I'd like to see what they come out with, would be cool, but probably expensive.

Xbox has not even come close to taken over PS2 or PS3 you need to get your facts straight. I highly tought they will come close to a new handheld.Microsoft should stick with the Computer industry and leave the consoles to the big boys. :P
