New Cyber-shot Range With High Zoom

Cyber-shot Range With High Zoom
Sony jumped into the fray of growing zoom focal lengths, announcing two new Cyber-shot models at the PMA show. The 7.2-mp DSC-H5 and the 6.0-mp DSC-H2 both use Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 12x optical zoom lenses and focal length ranges of 36mm to 432mm. With optical image stabilization to reduce image blur and noise reduction technology, the new cameras also allow easier shooting in low-light conditions. Waste of Megapixels and Your Money

DSC-H2 was used four weeks before returning back to Sony. Purpose of this review is to share my experiences with this camera with others thinking of buying it.

Pro

None: DSC-H2 fell apart before I could find any.

Con:

1). The two Sony Stamina NiMH batteries that came with the DSC-H2 were defective and would not take a charge.

2). Extremely flimsy construction. Several weeks after receiving the camera, on the first day of my Europe vacation after only three pictures the DSC-H2's Shutter Button completely disintegrated. Made camera completely useless for taking pictures. When Sony refused to do anything about it, this forced to buy another camera to take pictures.

3). SanDisk 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo "Reinsert memory card" error .

4). Super SteadyShot® stabilization did not work 20% of time.

5). Image Noise. Noticeable at ISO 200. High levels at ISO 400 and above. At ISO 800 most images unusable.

6). Zoom Pixalization. Use of zoom caused a significant degree of pixalization which was especially noticeable at 10x and up.

7). Wide Angle Lense- Cause Chromatic aberration and distortion in images.

8). Autofocus: it would intermittently stopped working and I had to do it manually.

9) . DSC-H2 Ergonomics: Camera fatigue quickly becomes a problem. Bulky, awkward and difficult to hold.

10). Sony Customer Support Instead of trying to help solve problem became a major part of the problem.

11). Overall Image Quality: I can sum it up in two words- Extremely Disappointing! My daughter’s 4 megapixel camera produces equivalent and in some cases better images. DSC-H2 is not even in the same league with my old Canon G5.

Conclusion

After all of this I will stick to Canon and plan to buy a PowerShot S3 IS.
