Cheri Robertson ´sees´ with bionic vision

Published on 04/ 7/2006

Cheri Robertson lost both eyes in a horrific car accident 19 years ago, but the help of a new bionic vision system that stimulates the brain electrically has enabled her to 'see'. Neurosurgeon Kenneth Smith, M.D., of Saint Louis University School of Medicine, plans to perform the surgery within the next five years in patients who once had vision. One moot point of concern would be the risk of infection where the port goes into the head. Hopefully, Robertson's positive attitude and spunk will inspire those in a similar situation, and she should be applauded for risking herself for the benefit of future generations.
