Gateway reveals its Ultra Portable Notebook

Just days after Apple’s announcement of its 13.3” notebook, Gateway reveals its own thin and light notebook codenamed NX100X. It uses a 12” 1280x800 widescreen display, and is less than one-inch thin. A quick look at the specs shows that it can be equipped with *only* an Intel Core Solo 1.06 or 1.2Ghz processor, which is rather weak by today’s standards. Also, there is no option for a 7200rpm hard drive, which unfortunately is common for small laptops. On the graphics side, the NX100X is not really powerful either: an Intel integrated graphics processor takes care of the 2D and 3D functions. The reason why this solution is so popular is because the video core is integrated to the motherboard. It’s basically “free graphics” for anyone who buys the Intel chip that drives the motherboard (“chipset”). It is sufficient for productivity software, but do not expect any decent gaming experience and you should also question how it will run the new Windows Vista User Interface. On the photo, the NX100X looks rather nice but it remains to be seen if the beast is as shiny in real life.
