Skype, Dell team up

Skype, Dell team up
Skype and Dell have teamed up to offer faster VoIP calls for consumers. Each new Dell PC will have instant access to Skype's software, such as the 20.1" Dell XPS 2010. Other models like the Dell XPS 1210 will come pre-loaded with Skype along with a pair of noise-isolation earbuds, a webcam, and mobile broadband capability. This corporate move bodes well for both parties, as Dell being a seeding platform can share revenues with Skype as users tend to use whatever they are given after purchasing a brand new PC. It is also one of the most effective way to gain market share - just take a look at Microsoft's Internet Explorer a few years ago.

It's important to distinguish the capabilities of the XPS 1210 running Windows XP vs Windows Vista. You cannot assume that programs and peripherals from major vendors are Vista compatible. Dell may include Skype software, but as of this writing (July 2007), Skype does NOT work with the XPS 1210 and Windows Vista. ZoneAlarm has only now released compatible security software, and many web cams, printers, etc. are permanently left behind. Check compatibility before you buy, otherwise you may spend additional weeks and dollars to regain the functionality you previously had under XP.
