Coby PMP7040 has huge display
A 7" portable media player is virtually non-existent and remains the domain of most portable DVD players, hence Coby's PMP7040 is in a class of its own by virtue of it's display screen. Features of the PMP7040 are pretty ordinary, comprising of built-in speakers, MPEG 4 support, MP3 and WMA playback, a photo viewer, and a pretty sizeable 40GB hard drive. You can also find similar specifications on other smaller sized players, but in a society where size is everything, the Coby PMP7040 might just have the edge. B & H Photo and Video is offering the PMP7040 for $329.95.

I've had this player for a couple of weeks and think it's great for the money (199.99 at shopnbc.com).
On the plus side; near perfect playback w/ xvid and divx 5 encoded material, simple but functional controls, but mostly the large screen and ample storage capacity.
On the downside; too big to be pocketable, no case included, and the lack of equalizer audio presets unlike what is advertised.

I just got the Coby and I am very disappointed. The screen is relatively nice but that's all on the positive side.
The player is unbelievably slow to start. And worst, there are serious limitations with file names that are nowhere documented. For example, I had some DVD files copied to the players folder \Video\Northern Exposure\ - the player would not find the files. However, once I changed the folder name to \Video\NE\ the player at least recognized the video after a restart.
And then, there is no way to selct the audio for a DVD (if there are several tracks).
I though the fact that the player accepts VIDEO IN would be handy. It is not because it only allows to record either 30, 90, 120 (or 150?) minutes - no way to just view the video source.
I am pretty sure, though, that all these issues could be fixed with a firmware update but it does not exist yet. Until then it is what it looks like: a useless brick.
