Netgear SSL312 SSL VPN Concentrator
Posted on Sep 5, 06 08:17 PM PDT

Netgear's new SSL312 offers a clientless, secure remote access to network resources in a reliable SSL VPN package. The SSL312 is capable of handling up to 25 concurrent remote users via a standard Web browser, utilizing SSL technology to keep things under control. This removes the need to install customized client software on the remote computer, enabling users to access the corporate network via any PC or Web browser no matter where they are, as long as there is Internet access. The SSL312 features a couple of 10/100 Ethernet ports and a console port. Security is provided via SSLv3 and TLSv1.0. You can pick up one today for $545.

Don't be fooled. The VPN throughput client is only 64k but you'd never know it by reading the reviews.

I've tried this product and I too like it but what they fail to mention is that the VPN tunnel throughput is a mere 64k.

Something that should be noted about this unit: as of today (February 26, 2007), the VPN tunnel application does not work with either Windows Vista under ActiveX nor with Mac OS X under Java running on an Intel Mac (PowerPC Macs work fine). Netgear needs to rewrite the ActiveX/Java applets that the unit deploys to clients. I spoke with Netgear technical support on these issues and they reported that they hope to have the issue fixed "within a few months", which I find unacceptable. A pity, really, since I really like this product overall; easy to set up , easy to use, with a lot of bells and whistles.
