One Laptop per Child receives a name
Remember the $100 notebook that is meant for use in the One Laptop per Child Organization project? This extremely affordable notebook has been christened the 2B1 and comes with the ability to create a mesh network out of the box, connecting two computers without an Internet connection. Both computers can then share an Internet connection automatically with just one of them connected. The 2B1 boasts a 7.5" TFT display and a maximum resolution of 1200 x 900 pixels. An AMD 400MHz Geode processor will power the applications, while the rest of the 2B1 consists of 128MB of RAM and 512MB of SLC NAND flash memory. This VoIP-enabled laptop also has a webcam, an SD card slot, three USB 2.0 ports, a mic, and a speaker. With an expected life span of 5 years, the 2B1 is widely expected to bridge the digital divide in developing countries.
