Hitachi crams DVDs into cartridge
Published on 10/ 6/2006

Forget both Blu-ray and HD-DVD. Hitachi has perfected (well, almost) the art of storage with its Stacked Volumetric Optical Discs (SVOD) technology. The super-brainy engineers at Hitachi managed to cram in a century of 92 micrometer thick double-sided DVDs into a cartridge that measures just 6.4cm in order to achieve a whooping 940GB of storage as opposed to a double-sided Blu-ray disc which holds a mere 50GB of information. The DVD cartridge will go on sale early next year for approximately $340 a pop. And that's just the media - the player will probably cost an arm, a leg, and your kidney. If 940GB is not your cup of tea, don't worry. Hitachi is currently developing a Blu-ray model which will probably store data in the Terabytes.
