Zoom H4 handy digital recorder

Zoom H4 handy digital recorder
The Zoom H4 handy digital recorder from Samson looks more like an anal probe than anything else, but thankfully it functions in a much more civilized manner. The Zoom H4 might measure only 6" long, but it features a whole bunch of professional features including 4-track recording and a couple of XLR inputs. The dual internal condenser microphones is capable of recording 24-bit/96 kHz uncompressed digital audio, but you can switch over to MP3 recording with a maximum bit rate of 320kbps in case there is not enough space available on the SD memory card. The Zoom H4 is powered by a couple of AA batteries and offers up to 4 hours of continuous recording operation. It is available for $299, which is even more surprising as that makes it at least a hundred bucks cheaper than competitors in the market. Would anyone like to share their experience with the Zoom H4?

Have had this recorder for 2 months. Mostly recordings of mens vocal chorus and solo practice. Sound quality is simply outstanding. Works very well as PC interface also. Can't beat it for the price. Lots of others have commented on the cheap looks and construction, but I don't know anyone who owns a good microphone who would treat it roughly! Buy one. Won't be sorry.

Just received this from americanmusical.com -
Construction quality seems weak and probably accounts for the $100 difference. I expect the lettering to rub off within a month.
However, as a portable stereo recorder and a portable 4 track multitrack recorder and pc audio interface for (for example) Cubase LE or Tracktion it provides very good quality results.
