Ecopod E1 finally available
At last , the Ecopod e1 Home Recycling Center has been released. We first covered this mini recycling center a couple of months ago, and back then we had no idea when would it be available and for how much. Designed by BWM Designworks, the Ecopod is equipped with a can/plastic bottle crusher on one side while the other contains a set of bins for you to throw your glass, paper, and various recyclable items in their respective compartments. You can pre-order yours today for $328. Those who are living on a tight budget can just purchase a cheap can/plastic bottle crusher and set up three different wastebins and label them Glass, Paper, and Others instead.

What a piece of junk. We got one of these at work and it broke almost immediately. I agree, get a plastic box.

I got an ecopod, and I regret it. It looks pretty, but functionally it is very badly designed. It doesn't work. The crushing mechanism broke almost instantly. Even before it actually broke, it didn't do much. It doesn't crush *any* plastic bottles - it's not just that it doesn't crush big ones, it does not work at all on plastic. It doesn't crush many cans either, only very thin small ones. And now it's broken so doesn't crush anything at all. Now I have a $300 (and unnecessarily bulky) box to put my recycling in. Be smarter than I was, get a plastic box instead.

I'm thinking of getting this, doing research still. I've compared pricing and seems like eartheasy.com has the cheapest price. Takes a while to navigate to their store, tho. I'm going to put it in my office, my colleagues will finally recycle!

On the surface, this looks like a convenient -- and expensive ($328!) -- means for someone to help the environment. They even offer and online calculator to 'help' you show how much money you could save each year.

There are several major problems with this device:

1 - It will not work with common 2 litre, 1 litre, and 24 ounce plastic bottles.
2 - If you live somewhere where there is a bottle/can deposit law, this device will work against you as you cannot return crushed cans/bottles and receive your refund.
3 - The savings calculator encourages you to use smaller containers it will crush and not to use the 24+ ounce containers which are a more economical way to buy beverages.
4 - The web site mentioned the energy saved by the world if you use this device, but does not take into account the amount of energy USED in the manufacture of the device itself. You cannot have it both ways.

I'm 'greener' than 90% of the population, but devices like this are no help -- they just make people feel like they are doing good when they really are not much good at all. K.I.S.S.
