FIC to develop open source smartphone

Despite having a healthy amount of gadgets using open source applications, none of them have taken the bold step to use open source as a platform for their product. FIC intends to change this mindset by releasing the FIC-GTA001 smartphone that features common features such as MP3 playback, a GPS navigation system, and GSM that can be added to and extended by the open source community. The software development kit will be provided by FIC themselves for developers to get cracking. FIC hopes that the community will be able to make the most of this Samsung S3C2410-powered cellphone by creating a community space for FIC-GTA001 owners. This idea, should it take off, will definitely see vast leaps in the industry on the whole. More hardware specifications are available after the jump. • 2.8" 480 × 640 TFT display
