China develops own next-gen DVD
Published on12/10/06

Everybody knows that China, traditionally dubbed as the Sleeping Dragon, has finally awoken from its slumber and has since turned a high nose against most global technology, preferring instead to develop its very own standards in order to stem the reliance on foreign technology. This move has seem limited success with their own form of WiFi encryption (WAPI), 3G wireless standard (TD-SCDMA), and even a next-gen DVD standard known as Enhanced Versatile Disc. This standard uses red lasers and advanced compression technology to achieve 1080p High Definition video that is provided by Blu-ray and HD DVDs. What makes it interesting is the price factor - EVD players cost a fraction of either HD DVD or Blu-ray players. Will this new standard make its way across the world with a low entry cost ($87 for an EVD player)?
