LG Blu-ray and HD-DVD Players
Posted on Jan 9, 07 02:23 AM PDT
CES 2007 - At Ubergizmo, we largely ignored the HD-DVD vs. BluRay war and it turns out we were right. With LG’s announcement of optical drives and player supporting both formats, this makes the whole debate obsolete: from a compatibility point of view, it does not matter which format wins, if the hardware supports both. It will just end up like the DVD-R+ and R- “war”: nobody cares about it today.
People keep referring to VHS vs. Betamax but recent history shows that optical discs compatibility is not a technology issue: it is a licensing issue.
Now, from a storage capacity point of view, BluRay is still superior to HD-DVD, but unless the blank discs prices come down very quickly, I will not care. I think that it is cheaper and more practical (for me) to buy hard drives. With street prices of $69 for 300GB, hard drives are very practical and fast. Unless your hobby is to download illegal stuff, I do not see why you would stash BluRay discs. Opinions?Your Comments

I just went to Netflicks to see what the score is:
HD DVD 400 titles
Blu-Ray 450

WOW! The videotape format wars WERE a licensing issue. Sony held the technology patents for the Betamax system, and wanted to monopolize on what was a superior format. Their greed was their demise. JVC, on the other hand, held the VHS patents, and understood that sharing the technology would earn customers and a winning technology. I'm almost ready to stop visiting your site. It's plagued with misinformation. Not to mention ignorance.

I totally agree this "war" is futile and without interest. I just want the goddamn disc to play.

At $69 for 300GB, why don't you buy a second hard drive to back this up? On Sony's website, a blank 50GB Blu-ray disc is worth $48 - ouch.

Content doesn't have to be illegal for you to need BluRay level storage. I've bought hundreds of songs from I-tunes and Allofmp3 and I've ripped about 100 discs to my hard drive. (None of this is being shared on P2P or anywhere else). The folder all of this music is in is about 80GB. It would be very cool to back all this up on just 2 BluRay discs rather than 20 single layer discs. This would also be great for anyone with a lot of large picture files (Not everyone saves their images as jpg's.TIFF Paintshop and raw files are big)
