Pharos Launches the GPS 600 Phone
Posted on Jan 3, 07 06:00 AM PDT
Pharos has been known for their windows-based GPS devices for some time. I always believed that in the not so distant future, all phones would have an integrated GPS. Is this another sign of that convergence? This GPS phone is a GSM world-phone (based on an ETEN GloFish and not an HTC, as I said previously) and will also support WiFi and Bluetooth. No 3G, sorry. It will be sold “unlocked” for the relatively expensive price of $700 – wow, that’s expensive.
Obviously it will feature the Pharos Ostia (read review) navigation software that offers door to door routing and many other GPS goodies. Specs are below.
Specs
• Touch screen (looks like 240x320)
• Quad-band GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz cellular modem; GPRS, EDGE, Blootooth® version 2.0 class 2+EDR; and WLAN 802.11b/g.
• Unlocked SIM card slot easily accepts user’s existing SIM card and wireless carrier service.
• Free three-month subscription to Pharos Smart Navigator Web-based location services.
• Windows Mobile 5.0 with Microsoft Office Mobile.
• Digital camera with 1200x1600 pixel resolution; GPS location stamping capability for future “navigation by image” function.
• Built-in microphone and speaker for hands-free operation; supports external stereo headset.
• Lithium-Ion Polymer rechargeable battery: up to 5 hours talk time; 15 hours PDA use; 160 hours standby.
• Bonus Microsoft Streets & Trips for trip planning on a PC.
• SiRFStarIII GPS receiver, pre-loaded maps of US & Canada, Pharos’ Ostia navigation & routing software

I've learned that ETEN does not manufacture this model, but rather licence the design from a third company. Does someone know who really makes it?
