Concept device tracks our water usage
Posted on Mar 22, 07 07:46 PM PDT

While we might go to war over oil at the moment, it is inevitable that nations will fight each other over water in the future due to our nonchalant attitude towards this precious resource now. The Personal Water Meter (PWM) concept from Adam Kereliuk aims to increase our awareness of just how much water we each consume per day, tracking our usage via shower, tap, and sink fixtures at home. At the end of the month, you will be able to see how many litres have been used/wasted, giving us a better idea on conserving water. Water flows through the propeller, where a small sensor within will count the revolutions of the propeller and send the information to its CPU in order to determine the volume of water that passed through.

My water is divided up by all the houses in my complex and hidden in my HOA fee. I'd love something like this to figure out the water for my house. Perhaps you could have a type that goes in-line at the main and uses wi-fi to broadcast to your computer. Separate cold and hot water measurements would be helpful too.

I had such little time to come up with this for a competition- although it is designed to fit garden hoses, it can't track (yet) some of the bigger outlets of water such as irrigation etc. I was so surprised to see my idea being passed around on different design blogs- its nice to see.

While I totally support the inventor's idea of urging people to care how much water they use, I have some concerns about this device. It doesn't seem to have the capacity to measure toilet use which is a huge portion of most indoor residential use. The device also would be impractical to measure outdoor use for lawns and gardens, which in my region amounts to over 40% of total water use. Maybe future version of this devide will address these larger problems.

Most people just look at how much money they owe in their bills, not how many gallons they used.

I see how much water I use every month when I get my water bill...
