Nokia possibly interested in Palm
Posted on Mar 2, 07 09:43 AM PDT

Nokia, among other candidates, is said to be in talks to acquire Palm Inc, the creator of the Treo. With a price target of $20 per share, the transaction would cost 2 Billion dollars to the new owner.
I do understand why Palm would like to sell: the Treo brand is still flying high, but there are significant clouds on the horizon. On the hardware side, they are under attack by HTC (which, at least, provides some components for the Treo 700w), Samsung, LG and soon, Apple. On the software side, Windows Mobile is making big strides in the smartphone market and Palm will have a hard time to compete.
If this speculation is true, it simply means to me that Palm doesn’t think that it can compete in the near future. Either way, I think that the Treo brand will survive - do you?

The only hope for Palm is to get on with the work and finish a new version of some kind of Palm OS.

Palm's hardware are outdate; they are being attacked by Samsung, Apple and HTC...I have the Treo 700w and can't wait to get the Samsung i760 when it's available....

It's a threat because Palm used to be able to differentiate themselves with their unique software. Now, they compete on the hardware only and the competition is giving them a run for their money.
I don't think that the Treo is the best Windows Mobile out there anymore and Palm's competition doesn't have to continue to support and develop an OS that is losing ground. It's a competitive advantage.
Hopefully Palm will come out with something soon.

I don't understand why the strides of Windows Mobile is a threat to Palm. Palm's Treo line includes the best Windows Mobile devices out there. It seems to me that Palm has hedged their bets by backing both Windows Mobile AND Palm OS.
