PC could run on light in future
What a world it would be if a computer could run on light instead of electronics, helping the earth stay green in the process as less power is consumed. This effort is led by physicists at the University of Bath, and it involves research in attosecond technology. If you're feeling dazed by these terms, here's the skinny on it: attosecond technology is the ability to send light in a continuous series of pulses that last one billion-billionth of a second, using this medium to convey information as Moore's law comes to an end. It will be a long time in coming, but as long as somebody thinks of an alternative to the ridiculous GHz-race, everybody wins.

This won't bring Moore's law to an end, in fact it doesn't appear to have anything to do with it. This is about the energy used to power the computer, not the speed of it's processing.

And if you decide to use this technology to convey the datastream, not the power, then it will extend Moor'es law. Cutting the distance in half will double the speed. Reducing the dimension of the light beam or using different frequencies allows multiple light beams to be used simultaneously, again increasing speed. Even though it is no the (apparent) subject of the Bath research, attosecond is a logical step in the application of Moore's Law.

The conclusions in this post are an embarrassment.
