SanDisk announces CF 5000 series
SanDisk might actually have too much time on their hands to release the CompactFlash 5000 series with the words "Industrial Grade" emblazoned across the front unashamedly. Available in capacities ranging from 512MB to a whopping 8GB, these uber tough memory cards offer write speeds of 30MB/sec and are made from higher-grade materials that actually prolong the life of your CD card. While this doesn't give you an excuse to abuse the CompactFlash 5000 series, at least you are secure in the knowledge that they won't roll over and enter digital heaven anytime soon. Pricing details are unknown, but they will be available this summer.

This will (hopefully) be what our company is looking for with regards to the XP embedded market. Now if I could find some place where it can be bought - Can't seem to find anyplace that carries it.

Has anyone actually seen the stuff?

The comment above is right. An Industrial CF isn't really designed for cameras, but rather for embedded applications. I'm pretty sure most cameras wouldn't even utilize the UDMA4 on the card. It's great to see that SanDisk is releasing fixed disk cards, but that sort of write speed isn't cutting edge at all. There are plenty of faster cards out already.

Too much time on their hands?

Well, if the only thing that you have ever seen is your Canon compact, then you might even be excused for being ignorant. But if you've ever seen any embedded system (EKG in hospital, ABS in your car, ...) you might apreciate the fact that "industrial grade" means just that: industrial and not your average Joe gadged consumable.

These things are simply made to completely another specification and SanDisk, while a strong player in embedded area, is by no means making a product that would be uncommon or even extraordinary ahead of competition. Industrial grade CF is a well known term with well known expectations on a well established market. It just happens that you probably know nothing about any such market, as you probably never participated in it.

Live and learn...
