The UV Beads Checker from Japan aims to prevent this from happening by coming in transparent beads that change color under the presence of strong UV light. You can wear this around your wrist as a bracelet or throw in a piece or two of Swarovski crystals for an added touch of beauty. Prices start from $6 upwards, but I don't think you're naive enough to depend on these beads to tell you just how much UV light you're getting while standing under the hot sun in the afternoon.
