Canon PowerShot S5 IS
Posted on May 7, 07 10:00 AM PDT

Canon has recently launched the PowerShot S5 IS digital camera, featuring an 8 megapixel CCD sensor and a 12x optical zoom, along with Canon's very own DIGIC III image processor, Face Detection Technology, and a new Red-Eye Correction feature to give you the best shots possible under most conditions. The PowerShot S5 IS also features an increased sensitivity range of ISO 80 to 1600, a higher resolution 2.5" vari-angle LCD, extended video recording, and PictBridge support. Sounds pretty much like the next natural evolution for Canon cameras without offering anything truly groundbreaking. More features are available after the jump.

• 8.0 Megapixel CCD
• DIGIC III with advanced Noise Reduction technology and Face Detection
• Red-Eye Correction in playback
• 2.5” high-resolution vari-angle LCD
• Long-play VGA movies with stereo sound and Photo in Movie
• 22 shooting modes including full manual control and 0cm Super Macro
• High ISO 1600 and Auto ISO Shift
• Compatible with Wide/Tele/Close-up converter lenses and Canon EX Speedlite flashes
• Precision Optics

I have a FZ-20 and was looking to upgrade. I thought this would be the upgrade, but sadly no. The rather small 1/2.5 sensor size compared to a Fujifilm F31 1/1.7 is a joke. Hanging on the the Panasonic for now. Don't need any more cameras that take bad low light pictures.

The 2 CD's included with this camera do not explain a number of the terms used in the camera menu nor do they offer any guidance in the matter of using the camera controls most effectively

Too bad this seemingly impressive camera doesn't support raw files. The Zoom mechanism is equally unimpressive. Canon does this on purpose to compel buyers to go for a dsrl. they should learn from the likes of panasonic and Fujifilm.
