RCA unveils family jewels
May 3, 07 08:41 PM PDT

While the iPod might have sold a phenomenal amount since its introduction, RCA is going against the grain by offering alternatives to Apple's successful range of digital media players. Known as the Gem Line brand, you get the RCA Opal PMP that stores up to 680 songs or 8 hours of video, featuring compatibility with music download and subscription services such as eMusic, Yahoo! Music, and Napster among others. Other devices in the same line are the RCA Pearl which is a USB flash drive and music player, the RCA Jet player for gym buffs, and the RCA Jet Stream which features wireless headphone connectivity. The Opal, Pearl, and Jet players retail for $75, $49, and $69 respectively.

becuse I was in a rush to use it, and didn't let it charge for 3 hours it won't install. If I do let it charge for that amount of time will it finally be detected? or should I just give up?

Jessica, Jessica, Jessica...the directions clearly state that you must allow your MP3 to charge for at least 3 hours before using. Next time, read a little.

Well I have had my opal since the end of April. I just bought one for my son for his birthday. Then I discover they are trash. My son can not load music on his from his computer even though he has Windows XP. I do not know what happened to mine, worked fine until just recently. I use it to listen to music at work. Suddenly, I lost the volume on the right ear phone. Suddenly, my computer can not recognize the opal and I have to giggle it to get it to charge. I do not throw the thing around, and it only fell off the top of my notebook computer (but this was after the ear phone troubles) when I moved the computer from my lap to the couch. It landed on carpet from about 1.5 feet drop. After that drop, my computer can not recognize it. And now the sound on both ear phones fade in and out. Pressing on the front and back of the female jack somewhat elevates the problems.

Mine is whacked. I just bought it less then 2 hours ago, came home and started putting music on it. Out of nowhere it says that it cant finish the songs because its been unplugged or cant be detected. Neither of that is true, it was in secure doing its thing. I tried to turn it off but it wont go, tried the reset, wont go. unplugged it and have been sitting here watching a USB TRANSFERRING screen for the past ten minutes swearing like a maniac in my head. HELP

I've had the Opal for a few weeks and so far I'm pretty happy! It's slender and lightweight... not cumbersome at all which is excellent for my purpose (use for long hours at the poker table). This is my first mp3 player so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I like the color screen, the sorting options... it's just all around a great little player. I also like the earbuds that come with it! The rubber covers on them make them comfortable and block out much outside noise. This player has great sound even through the provided earbuds, without spending bunches of cash on new headphones. The battery charges through an included USB cable and takes about three hours to get a full charge the first time.
I like it so much that I'll be buying several more for family members as gifts!
