Rumor: iPhone to feature GPS?

While the iPhone is not even out yet, there are already rumors that the iPhone will be released with a GPS update at Macworld next year, thanks to an integrated Assisted GPS chipset which takes a much faster time to determine the user's current location. Do you think Apple will pull such a stunt and incense iPhone owners who picked up this smartphone later this summer? Should this rumor be true, it will be very Nintendo-like, with the Japanese gaming giant releasing a hardware refresh barely a year after the Nintendo DS was launched. The DS Lite went on to do gangbusters in terms of sales - will history repeat itself here?

NO GPS = NO IPHONE. I will wait until Spring, now that some (nice) jackass let the cat out of the bag.

Yeah, many of us have navi in our cars, but what about when we travel? That's why I'd want a GPS-enabled iPhone.

Not all people have cars with NAV systems so
NO GPS = NO iPHONE. Plus, I'd gladly wait until Apple improves/fixes whatever issues the existing version has. I'm sure it'll come next year, it'll become a default feature in most mobile phones.

You don't really need GPS for location with GSM phones. There's a kind of network-based location that the GSM carriers in the US use. Its all because of the FCC and the Enhanced 9-1-1 stuff

iPhone GPS ? Why?. 99 % of the time I need an address I am driving, I use my car NAV. When I am walking 99.9 % of the time I know where I am. If I am jogging I definitely not need GPS, so for me whether it has it or not is irrelevant. the iPhone is a breakthrough in Telephony, is primarily a phone remember? just imagine listening only to the voicemails you want to actually listen to ...AAAH. WI-FI do I need then 3G, I have right now a 3G Blackjack and Internet browsing S**** with capital S. You can't browse anything. So if I have Wi-Fi do not care about 3G data transfer etc. I paid $300 for my ipod. Easy will pay $500 for a Phone-iPod-Wireless internet device.

The iPhone looks incredible, just to have something compatible with my Macintosh would be a dream. But there are two things I am hesitant to give up. My Verizon Network that plain works everywhere I travel to, unlike others I know of. The other feature I love is the GPS feature of my phone. For the first time ever in 30 years of driving through Los Angeles I made it through to Hollywood without making u-turns or back tracking, etc. Verizon's GPS feature is so perfect. So Apple, please add a GPS feature to your phone that rivals Verizon, especially since you are charging and arm and a foot (almost an entire leg) for this new phone.

I have three clear hopes of GPS integration: one that 'where am I' is possible via G-maps, two would be leaving virtual messages (either video or image) for others to just bump into (virtually) and three would be to insert the GPS x,y into an image taken so when uploading that to a service like Flickr it will show on their map.

G-maps needs GPS to work *properly*, here in London, UK trying to find places would be a lot easier with it, especially when walking.

Mobil phones have a much shorter life cycle then video game devices. Releasing a new model every year feels pretty normal to me. I'm not guying an iPhone until it have GPS and 3G/UMTS.

I'd love GPS but I'm scared of GPS hacking. I don't want spammers, sploggers or whatever inundating me with crap.

You thought those Google ads were personalize, just wait till they use GPS to tell you that you're driving near a store that you might be interested in.

I plan on picking up the iPhone they day it becomes available and if Apple pulls that, I will boycot them. Up until I pick up the upgraded iPhone that is. GPS is not something that I'm crazy about personally. My car is equipped with Navi, so it's not a huge deal to me as a usually konw where I am. The good news is, you can probably resell your iphone online for a good 70% of what you paid for it even after 6 months to a year.
