AirDrives to help save your ears
Ken Wright is rightly (no pun intended) concerned about the iPod phenomenon that could result in permanent hearing damage in younger people, and he has come up with the AirDrives, essentially a pair of hybrid earphones. The AirDrives enable outside noises to pass through to the ear while they're in use while preventing ear damaging decibel levels that standard headphones achieve. While others prefer to isolate themselves from the outside world, the AirDrives does otherwise, keeping you connected aurally with your surroundings while grooving to your favorite track. The AirDrives will be released this September for $99.99 a pop, with the kids' version retailing for $30 less. Do you prefer to zone out when chilling to music, or have a semblance of what's going on?

A comparable product is available from Acousticlobe at MyLobie.com. Lobies offer interchangeability with existing earbuds and feature comparable functionality at a fraction of the cost for Airdrives.

I am definitely going to buy these. I was almost hit by a car while riding my bike in traffic while using ear buds. I will just feel safer with these.

Noise isolating earbuds should be outlawed. They're a safety hazard. The EU already requires a lower maximum output on mp3 players. If you want to listen to music without ambient noise sit in your den with a good set of Sennheiser headphones. Though the Open-Aire are probably the better sounding...
