FCC approves Archos 605 PMP
The FCC has just given its nod of approval to the Archos 605 Portable Media Player, which means you can start saving your pennies today when it is finally released. The Archos 605 comes with WiFi connectivity and is touted to be the most advanced PMP available today. Features include a high resolution 4.3" display at 800 x 480 pixels, an integrated TV program guide for easy scheduling and recording of programs, a 30GB hard drive, and an SDHC memory card slot. The Content Portal feature lets you pick up music, movies and TV shows for new content as they are made available. Pricing details are currently unknown. Will this be a direct competitor to the video iPod? I would've liked to see a larger hard drive, although the SDHC memory card slot (up to 16GB) is a nice touch.

well... a few things to add. the 30 gig version will not have the SD card slot. however, the 4 gig Flash based memory version will. not mentioned is that this player also uses a TOUCH SCREEN interface. there will be several versions, and some pricing information IS available (price and capacity info directly from amazon.com and archos.com, check yourself if you like)

4gb w/SD slot - $229.99
30gb (no SD) - speculated at $300
80gb (no SD) - $349.99
160gb (no SD, but why would you need it?) - $399.99

The 80gb (and 30gb if it is made) should be direct competitors with the iPod, and in my opinion are much better, feature-wise. but the real gold here is that 160gb player... yes indeed there is a MUCH larger hard drive available. the built in WiFi also is supposedly going to allow you to stream music and videos from your computer to the player (think iTV only portable), as well as browse the web (if you are willing to shell out a few extra bucks for the licensed plugin). i personally am ditching my iPod video the second i can get my hands on one of these!
