Bruce, I suppose after 5 years of using this the manufacturer probably thought that it's customers would be experts by then...I myself prefer to use the traditional timer just like you.

I bought an item very similar to this at Brookstone in the U.S. over 15 years ago. It lasted around 5 years until the clear plastic cover lens separated from the color changing backing. I find it easier to set a timer on the stove. I guess it would be useful if you wanted some of the eggs in a single batch soft boiled and some hard...
