Kwikset SmartScan does away with keys
Posted on Jul 10, 07 12:27 AM PDT

For those who love living a keyless lifestyle, there is the Kwikset SmartScan that uses a biometric scanning door opening solution instead. This is great for those who suffer from memory lapses that cause them to forget their house keys as well. All you need to do is swipe the appropriate digit and an "Open Sesame" will be performed. Of course, the SmartScan holds more than a single biometric signature, so you can assign the entire family while keeping annoying relatives out. Hopefully power failures and brownouts will be rare and fare between, else you'll need to use the manual override to get into your home. The Kwikset SmartScan retails for $200 a pop.

I would REEEEEAAALLLY love for this thing to work but…
After installing my Kwikset Smartscan Biometric deadbolt, It worked properly though intermittently, for a few months or so. Then, while standing in the rain, it took me 36 swipes to get the lock to open. I called tech support line and they said it sounded like the circuit board and sent out a replacement. That one did fine for a couple of months. Then, when I would try to scan, it would cycle through “try again…scan error...try again…” without me even touching it. I called tech support again and they said that it, again, sounded like the circuit board and sent a replacement a week later. I got it yesterday and installed it. It worked for 1 day….ONE DAY!
It started doing the exact same thing. I’ve re-inserted the ribbon connector, removed and replaced the batteries, checked that the sensor was clean…While disconnected from the sensor, I looked at the LCD and it was cycling through the “sensor error/ try again” and the sensor wasn’t even connected!
The front door faces West and the door/lock heats up in the afternoon so it could be a heat related problem but I checked it late in the afternoon and the lock/sensor was still easily handleable . All I know is I’m out $300 and a WHOLE lot of time remounting/testing/reprogramming, etc and I still can’t get in the front door.
I must assume that the product itself is faulty by design and I reluctantly give up. I'm sending you BOTH units since they're useless to me. The "new" one along with the one it was sent to replace. Perhaps you can use them for more R&D or something but as far as I can see, the Kwikset Smartscan Biometric Fingerprint Deadbolt is a really nice idea that just doesn't work.

I purchased this lock about a week ago. Install was not easy and programming could have been easier. The rest of my house was a brass look. I searched everywhere for this lock in a polished brass and the only place I could find it was GoKeyless. Lowes and Home Depot told me they didn't even make it. I ordered on line through the GoKeyless Store, never talked to anyone. I live in Florence,SC, and I did receive the lock in two days.

Since on this product it linked to a particular company on where to buy it would only make sense folks talk about it. If service was lousy and the lock was terrible that would probably be mentioned. I do know that companies want people to mention it when they get good service.

This runs on DC batteries not AC... Nice review how about you review it and not talk it up. I really can't believe everyone bought one at the same online dealer... HMMM Nice ad.

I am certainly glad I found this site. Ubergizmo is fantastic. It is nice to here other folks comments about the Smartscan and GoKeyless Company. There are lots of companies to buy from but knowing that others have such a wonderful experience with GoKeyless and with Kwikset, this makes me feel comfortable when i order. I also like the Lotitech diNova, would recommend to anybody.

I found the Smartscan on GoKeyless.com. I called them to ask some questions and the customer service people were great at answering my questions. I was so pleased with the personal service that GoKeyless provided me that I actually purchased two locks.

I would also like to report positive things about this product. One thing I would like to tell folks about is if your looking for a brass finish GoKeyless is the only place that has it. I think it is because GoKeyless is one of the few authorized dealers of Kwikset that is online.

I took the advice for the previous posters and bought my lock, also from GoKeyless.com and it is wonderful. The lock is made by Kwikset, a name you can trust. The service I received from GoKeyless makes them another name you can trust.

I purchased this smartscan lock a couple of weeks ago. I just got it installed over the weekend. I absolutely think it is the greatest thing since slice bread! I ordered from the same company, GoKeyless. I talked to a person named Russell. He was SO NICE! Great product, customer service.

I bought the lock in January. I absolutely love it. I purchased it from GoKeyless.com. I call and a live, knowledgable person who spoke english actually answered the phone! I had an issue with the install. Turned out is was something simple. GoKeyless walked me right thru it. I would recommend this lock and GoKeyless to anyone! (Actually I bought one for my 82 year old mother!)
