Teleshadow system from Japan
We all know how the webcam has managed to bring friends and family closer together across long distances, thanks to a decent Internet connection. The Japanese, on the other hand, will benefit from the Teleshadow system that brings back the days of yore where paper walls were used in homes, with the shadow of a person being cast against the world, serving a reminder to the rest of the people in the room that there is somebody else nearby. The Teleshadow system won't be a bona fide communication tool but will probably act as an artistic device of some sort. So you can view the silhouette of your friend from miles across - still can't beat a full color video of him/her though. Do you think this idea will catch on?
