XRCADE fitness centers for kids
Posted on: September 18, 2007

Forget the gym - that's way too mature for kids to get involved. The XRCADE fitness center would be more relevant, offering stuff that normal gyms have such as wall climbing and recumbent bicycles, but what would really attract the little ones would be arcade games such as DDR machines as well as snowboard simulators in addition to padded obstacle courses. There are half a dozen XRCADEs operating nationwide, with plans to roll out even more in due time. According to CEO Mike Hansen, "These kids grew up in such a technology-driven environment. With video games, they have control and they have a challenge. Put them on a treadmill and they don't see any gratification. Give them a game and they get instant gratification." Having said this, Wii Fit could be a sleeper hit when released.

The hardware & software choices in this fitness category are incredibly anemic. Most of the game offerings are reactive not inter-active... where you actually can control the strategy of game play. It's the level of engagement at the game level that will ultimately make or break this category. Unfortunately most of the manufacturers in the sector come from the fitness industry and don't have a clue what children who play video games want in a game-based fitness environment. Right now what you have in this XRCADE concept is a handful of business people who see a trend and are trying to figure out how to cash in on it by throwing as much poop at the wall to seeing if any of it sticks. As with all entertainment-centered models CONTENT is KING. The video-gaming industry does not want 3rd party developers taping into their content and will do everything they can to keep this from happening. This leaves the equipment manufacturers with the daunting and expensive task of developing their own content. This will never happen as it is just too cost prohibitive for fitness equipment manufacturers to develop game software. IMHO the future for this category is questionable and will never advance if it's left up to fitness equipment manufacturers.
