Hitachi announced 4TB HDDs by 2011. So?
Oct 15, 07 11:19 AM PDT
Shocker: Hitachi says that storage capacity will continue to grow the way it has been growing until now, doubling every two years. What’s the news? Not much. Although there is a risk that hard drives will reach a storage-per-square-inch limit at some point, Hitachi seemed in the mood to share their relief that (they think that) they have secured the technology that will keep them in the race. It’s also a way create the perception that they are the leader.
"Hitachi continues to invest in deep research for the advancement of hard disk drives as we believe there is no other technology capable of providing the hard drive's high-capacity, low-cost value for the foreseeable future," (Hiroaki Odawara, Hitachi Research Director).
He’s probably right, flash isn’t going to overtake drives’ capacity anytime soon, but really, that’s not news either.
