Microsoft patents Touch Interface, Looks strangely like Apple’s

Hum let me look in the future… Microsoft is going to come out with a Windows Modile “Touch Interface”. Oh wait a minute, I wasn’t looking in the future, but simply at these images and at the patent office website. People are already calling it the ZunePhone, although it sounds ridiculous. Oh well, sometimes, it’s better to copy something that works than invent something that doesn’t.

"Zune Phone" would be really lame. So would zPhone. Saying your "in the Zone" might be catchy. But the Land Of Clippy & Bob will probably coin it the "Phune."

perpetualtranze, thanks for the kind comments about this blog.

We often have different views than other gadgets sites, but I think that I would disagree when you say that it is "not even remotely close to the iPhone/Touch". Granted, we have not used the new Microsoft UI, but it is probably reasonable to say that they "look similar".

Is is just me or does this look NOTHING like the iPhone/Touch interface? I really like this blog, I do, so please don't start going the ways of Engadget and Gizmodo and slap an Apple comment on everything Microsoft produces. Sorry, I just don't see it, I mean it's not even remotely close to the iPhone/Touch interface...you have actually used one before, right?

sorry if you think I overreacted. I don't like either WinMo or Darwin, but you have to give them credits for the nice stuff. Apple's looks good, and this thing made by MS is awesomely functional. Did you read the patent to see all the innovations?... you should've written about them too.. yesterday I just flipped when seeing all the 'iphone ripoff' posts...

Hi, thanks for the comments. I don't think that we should be called Apple a**-kissers, and we quite often get flamed by Apple fans for saying that Apple did not invented a bunch of stuff (GUI, right mouse button, all-touch UI) or even that some of their product plainly suck (Apple HiFi anyone?).

However, Apple did do a good job of making things like all-touch-interface popular and high-profile. Microsoft might have seen the S60 Interface and think "Pah, that will never work", but from the outside, it really looks like they thought: "hum, people do like that stuff, let's jump on the bandwagon".

Microsoft had plenty of chances to "follow" whoever really "invented" the all-touch UI, heck they even had a Windows Device with it (NeoNode), but they chose to go for it after the iPhone and iPod iTouch became popular. It's hard to deny that the iPhone had nothing to do with the current wave of "clones" that are in the works.

I've added some link to the full-post.

Well, since the iPod is so popular, every other manufacturer's design team would be stumped in brainstorming... and most would just nip one or two similar designs from the iPod.

it does look similar, but then Apple didn't patent the Touch interface, but the double touch interface.

what's this apple asskissing and not-knowing-what-the-hell-you-are-talking?... :(

apple's interface looked like s60's, adding just the touch... but why did nobody say that "apple designed a touch interface, looks kinda like nokia's"

since this is your blog you can say whatever you want, but I think your thoughts are a little to narrow. Yes, they look similar, but I believe that they look similar cuz its a touch interface, not because its copied. I really dont understand why everybody says that everything new resembles somthing apple, is it because people dont like acknowledging fact or just plain ignorance?
