NTT DoCoMo to communicate via your body and Cell tech in a notebook

CEATEC - At a time when some consumers are still concerned about the effect of radio waves from mobile phones on the human brain, NTT DoCoMo and component manufacturer Alps Electric have decided to use CEATEC JAPAN 2007 to show off prototypes of a mobile phone and a communications module which actually depend on the human body as a communications media. Currently capable of 40 kpbs, one of the demos showed music being transferred from a mobile phone to a headset via the body. One proposed usage model is transferring information such as contact info when two people touch each other. An immediate reaction is “ewww, gross,” but humans should come up with all sorts of interesting ways to use this tech. NTT DoCoMo is also showing for the first time its new “Super 3G” mobile phone communications system which is aiming for 300 Mbps and completion by 2010.

One recent CEATEC tradition is some demonstration of a consumer application of the Cell Broadband Engine technology beyond the PS3. This year, Toshiba is showing off its new Spurs Engine “media processor” based on the Cell tech. Mounted in a notebook, the demo application uses facial recognition technology to animate changes to a face in real time. [CEATEC coverage by NikkeiBP's Tech On!]
