Sony updates PRS-505
Posted on Oct 1, 07 10:44 PM PDT

Sony has given its e-book reader, the PRS-505 an update that at first glance looks the same as its predecessor, but what's more important is to hold onto the adage not to judge a book by its cover. The new PRS-505 features a next generation electronic paper display that boasts superior response times and a higher contrast ratio, complete with double the levels of gray scale at 8. It will be slimmer as well, and come with a more intuitive button layout that is more user friendly. You can choose from silver or dark blue colors, and this updated Sony PRS-505 will not see a price reduction with the final sticker standing firm at $300. What's the latest e-book you read lately?

When I go on vacation I usually end up packing three or four books in a bag with me. Having a "single-purpose" device may seem strange to some, but it sure beats packing all that paper around.

I actually LOVE eBooks...and have read dozens...on my Treo's 320x320 screen. Most are, well, let's say, gray market titles...from alt.binaries...so I am not just limited to Huck Finn. That said, there is no way that I would carry a dedicated device for this purpose. It's great having 50 or so books on-hand at any given moment (all with built-in booklighting), but they are on-hand because they are built into my phone...and because I keep the phone on-hand and charged for other purposes. 300 beans for a bulky single-purpose device that I must keep charged? Uh, no thanks.
