Wireless sensors powered by vibrations

Fancy having wireless bridge sensors that are powered not by solar energy, but vibrations resulting from passing traffic? Well, researchers at Clarkson University, NY, have developed just that to make the life of bridge maintenance personnel easier since there no longer will be a need to replace batteries that are installed in hard-to-reach locations. This allows companies to monitor the bridge (ice conditions, traffic flows, health status, et al) without the need for battery maintenance, up to decades in theory. Harvesting kinetic energy is not new - remember those Citizen watches that ran perpetually? Any idea that helps conserve energy is a good one in my book, and good thing this is also a practical solution.
