4GB Laptops to flourish in 2008, with no decent software support
Dec 24, 07 11:38 AM PDT
It looks like 2008 is going to be the year where laptops will come with 4GB of RAM by default. This is due to the continually falling price of semi-conductor (you love it when you shop, but hate it when you own).
Before paying extra bucks, one should be aware that current 32-bit Windows (XP, Vista) can’t take advantage of 4GB of physical memory in most cases. The other issue is that 64-bit Windows has crappy driver support.
Here are a few links on the subject:
- The RAM limit for Windows XP Pro… 3GB?
- 4GB Windows (hardware) Memory Limit
- Google search for 3GB memory limit

Hi Admar, I understand that Linux64 has been going strong (we need to define what "strong" is, I guess) but most people still want/need to use Windows. At least, that's what I meant in the post.
Richard, Apple also has problems with the 3GB barrier. Google "macbook pro 3GB limit" and you'll see a long list of forum threads and articles.

But 64 bit Linux has been going strong for years - I have a Dell 1420N with 4Gs and it works great! I can access all 4Gs!

Except apple, they will come with just 1 or 2, and be prepared to charged (at least 700€ if you want 4gbs).
